Audi A4 B7 1.8T buying advice

    Hi all,

    Looking to buy a car.

I've been looking at lots of different cars, but I've whittled it down to the A4 1.8T.

Does anyone here have/had one, what kind of MPG do you normally get?

Are there any major issues I should be looking out for when viewing one?

I only drive 15km round trip to work a couple days a week, with occasional long journeys thrown in. Hence I don't want a diesel.

    Any other suggestions are appreciated!

    Thanks
    Daniel

I'd be looking for an S-Line Avant Quattro. Not so many of them about in that spec so they come at a premium. Mechanically I don't know much about them but being a turbo and 4WD if you go for that the old rule applies: more parts = more problems. I'd certainly be looking for something with a full service history.

    Thanks for your reply.
I wouldn't really be into the Avants, just not my thing...
The one I have my eye on is a 2006 S-Line with one owner and full service history.
    It's not a Quattro BTW.

Any FWD turbo VAG I've driven suffers from horrible torque steer. For me it would be Quattro or nothing.

    I'll be coming from a 1998 Caddy, 1.9d... It'll still be better than anything I've driven :)

Most of why I came on here was in regards to fuel consumption and reliability - But I do appreciate any input :)

    I find Carfolio pretty accurate:

In relation to reliability I've no experience but as I said earlier more parts = more problems.

Fuel consumption in mixed driving should be around the 30mpg mark. On long runs high 30's would be achievable.

Like any car they do suffer from their own small issues, specifically coilpacks, breather hoses, air flow meters, coolant temp sensors etc. None of these are going to break the bank however.

The big issue with these engines is internal sludge buildup leading to oil pressure problems and subsequent engine failure.

I would be looking in the history to make sure oil changes were carried out every 10k miles maximum. If the car has ever gone more than 10k between oil changes then if I were you I would budget for having the sump removed and cleaned out and the oil pump pickup pipe being changed so that you have peace of mind.

Thanks for that. Some good info there.

    Hi George,

Thanks for the info. I assumed there would be small bits, as with any car.
as for the oil sludge issue, how much should I budget to get that job done? It may be a help when I'm negotiating a price fair to both parties.

Cheers for that. I think the B6 and B7 share an engine, is it 160bhp?
