Friend has told me they are looking at an 08 passat 2.0 tdi.
Now I fairly familiar with the 1.9tdi of that era but not the 2.0, only that there are some troublesome versions of the 2.0 tdi fitted across the whole group.
Which engine codes should one avoid in these or are there oil pump drive issues on certain versions etc?

Get a late 08 or 09 one. The CR common rail ones didnt give trouble with the oil pump. The PD s were the ones that gave bother
However DPF DMF, EGR, injectors, electric handbrake can give bother

No known issues with the DPF unless your doing very short drives, Handbrake and caliper issues also ironed out by then plus no known issues with injectors.

Turbo actuator and EGR cooler are the only things I have replaced after 200k.

As above, steer clear of the PD and get a CR if at all possible. CR has smoother power delivery and is generally more refined, more economical and more reliable.
