great photo. And it proves that 'the best camera you have is the one you have on you.'

How did he take a photo on his iPhone that didn't look like crap when it was exploded up to billboard size?

The iPhone is a pretty decent camera , its all come along way from the early days of crap cameras on phone - i assume no one now uses or buys point and shoot

It's 8mp which isn't bad and the prints are viewed from far away I guess.
You would be surprised at the print quality from an iphone. I have a few iPhone prints by a Magnum photographer and the quality is really good.

I've made large banners and signage for vans in photoshop, my camera is a an olympus e-510, which I suppose is getting old now, but it can't make a nice large print.

I know if you view a large image from a distance it works out the same as looking at a small image close up but still pretty surprised to see an iPhone image can be blown up like that.

I hope he got paid the going rate for using an image in a massive world wide advertising campaign ?

It probably does look like crap. ...if you stand close enough.

Yes but it is only a billboard. It was never going to be pin sharp

I would say it would have to go through some retouching for a billboard to remove artifacts. The first picture above is still quite low to the ground, it would be easy to see artifacts as you can get quite close to it.

Yeah, that was my point. It could be printed at 2dpi and still look good at viewing distance.

remember most billboards are the same pixel density as your screen

the image is very graphic so you would get away with a lot more than if it was say a very layered landscape or a close up of an insect or something
