Incoming UCC Medical student: some questions?

    Hi,

I was just accepted to the UCC Medical GEM program and I have a few questions regarding transportation and accommodations. I live in Toronto and flights from Toronto to Cork (with a stopover in London) usually cost over $1000. However if I fly from Toronto to Dublin with Aer Lingus it is $750 but I will need to put up with a three-hour bus ride to Cork or take a train out of Dublin Heuston for 2.5 hours.

Out of the three (air with stopover, airport bus, train), which do you recommend for getting from Toronto to Cork? I'm not a big fan of long bus journeys but I don't mind if there is sufficient seat space.

For accommodations, my preferred residence is Victoria Lodge since it is cheap (4600 Euros for En-Suite bedrooms with your own bath) but the UCC guide recommends Sheares Gate which is much more expensive (6400 Euros) for double bedroom.

Can anyone comment on these accommodations? I would prefer to have a room with a bath to myself and not have to share.

Hey I'm doing dent not med, and I'm Irish, but hopefully I could help you a bit. If you're saving ~250 CAD, definitely fly into Dublin! There's plenty of ways to get down to ucc for far cheaper, and you could do a bit of sightseeing first too :P

With respect to the other thing, all I'm going to say is Sheare's gate accom is beautifully done, is apparently 90% North American students, and is far superior to Vic lodge anyway. It is stupidly expensive for Cork city prices though, and sort of far from the city but close enough to CUH!

    Best of luck with it.

Thanks, I've been researching a bit and Farranlea Hall now seems to be the best option. It is cheapest and open in June with en suite bed.

Farranlea is all booked up already wow. I guess I'll try Victoria Lodge/University Hall or the Spires.
