    Hope im in the right place!
    If im bringing my Ford Fiesta Zetec hatchback.2005 full Ford service history NCTd till Feb 2016 to trade in, how much would.I expect the Ford garage to allow me?

    First thing to get your head around is how a trade in offer is calculated.
    There is always discount from the list price up for grabs.
    The garage will have a "trade price" for your car.
    You will get offered a total of these figures vs the list price.
    The more discount up for grabs, the more trade in you get.

    You will almost always do better selling your car and buying straight, but some promotions boost trade ins and don't apply to straight deals.

    you'd certainly do better in a private sale, something like that should sell fast (if it's tidy) if you put it up for say €2950, take offers over €2500 imo. as above, a Ford main dealer mightn't be too interested due to it's age (despite it's good condition) so will try to scare you with a lowball offer. i'd +1 on a €1500 offer from ford.

    Ford are doing "swappage" trade in boost at the moment, bit "smoke and mirrors" but worth pricing anyway.

    Wife got €2,250 for hers which was an 03 fiesta, although it was a trade in on a brand new Golf.

    I'd be selling privately. In 2008 I was offered 500 Euros by a dealer for my 1994 Volvo 460 diesel. I declined, and sold it privately for £1000. Best of luck.

    I reckon you'd get into a 2010 for €7.5k upwards.
    Main dealer trade in.

    Most main dealers will not retail a 10 year old car as there is little or no profit by the time they prep it for resale and have to offer warranty. They will probably want to buy it at below trade price in order to sell on to a smaller dealer who sells cars of that age and value. If the car is as described then it would be a very attractive car to a first time buyer/driver so selling privately should not be too difficult.

    But if you are still keen to just trade it against a used car then focus on the cost to change price rather than how much they are giving you for your old car. Dealers can fudge figure around to make trade-in prices every attractive when all they are doing is adding it back onto the price of the newer car they are selling you. In order to know if you are getting a good deal you need to get a price against a similar car being sold by a different garage. Also don't be afraid to play them off each other and let them compete against each other.

    Very true. People seem very focused on how much they are getting for the car on a trade in and not as much focused on how much the new car is costng. Same way with people who want to go above 08 for the cheap tax and spending thousands more on a car they only keep for a few years.

    You should also be pricing how much the new car will be in a straight deal.
