Hi folks i'm in the market for a smaller (1.4-1.6l) petrol car for commuting-I saw a 2011 astra 1.4 with good spec for E13k..does this sound like a good deal, or should I avoid astras altogether? budget would be between 11 and 13.5k. thanks.

Which version of the 1.4 litre is it? The non turbo version is a terribly underpowered engine and not worth bothering with. The turbo charged 120bhp or 160bhp versions are much better but they are rare and tend to be mostly the 3 door version.

€13k is also very expensive for a 2011 example, 2012 examples going for similar money:

its a 2011 astra 1.4 sc 100ps,with 47000 miles on the clock, be would only be used for commuting between galway and oranmore, the mileage would be very low, no more than 8-10,000 miles per year..not really interested in performance as such, its only to get from a to b.

Well my advice is test drive one. The Astra is a heavy car, performance is not all about top speed but also about having enough power for overtaking when needed.
