Changing from Honda Accord to ?? (options)

So ... after 8yrs of pretty much trouble free ownership my 2001 Honda Accord has become uneconomical to repair (Clutch, CV Joints & Cat Convertor all need replacing).

I'm looking at replacements and have considered the following (4k- 5K budget) :

07 Mazda 6 1.8 petrol
07 Avensis 1.6 petrol

I was considering Volvo S40's or Saab 9-3's but have been warned off by a mechanic friend regarding costly repair bills / expensive parts.

I could stick with tried and tested and go with 06-ish Accord (petrol - I've no interest in Diesel) .

So any thoughts on Mazda 6's or Avensis from owners ? Pros / Cons - what to watch out for (known issues) ?

I'd go with another Accord, the 1.6 Avensis is really slow and underpowered.

You could also look at the 06 onwards civic 1.8 saloon.

I've owned a 05 Honda Accord 2.0 petrol and I've also drove both a toyota avensis(1.6 and 2.0) and I test drove a 2004 Mazda 6 (albeit diesel) Honda Accord by far the superior car and well worth the extra tax. Build quality is top class. It's also better looking and as reliable as the Mazda/avensis if not moreso.
Find a new accord.

The Accord is head and shoulders above a Mazda 6 or an Avensis no matter what criteria you are using to compare them.

imo the Accord is ahead of the other two with the avensis in second place and I'd put the Mazda a distant third.

Looks well, pity there's no interior photos.

If you have not already take an Accord for a test drive before you purchase the Mazda 6 to compare them.

Im switching from a 2001 Accord - I'm a big fan of Accords (and Honda in general as I've had previous years of trouble free motoring with Civics) ... the problem is I'm finding it tricky to get a decent Accord in the €4K range ... not interested in Diesel , or anything above 2.0 petrol ...

Would Mazda's reliability be comparable ?

I'd say it would be up there but not quite as good. Have you looked at the Avensis, the 1.8 or 2 litre, the high spec model with climate control is comparable to the Accord specwise and pricewise.

I had considered them ... but the more I look at them the less I like them. In test drives I prefer the Mazda 6

It's not just reliability though. Build quality on the Honda Accord is well above the Mazda 6 imo.

Mondeo is a big heavy car for 1.6. Would be better in 2.0 petrol form.

Have you thought about an Octavia, they are pretty decent spec, big boot, solid feel to them? A petrol one should go cheap enough.

Special Circumstances

Accord, legacy, mazda 6. All should be very good value in 2l petrol. Just not a fan of the toyota eventless. Can't see you going wrong with another accord.

Update : After clocking up the miles viewing various Accords / Mazda 6's in Dublin and surrounding counties, finally got myself a cracker ...
