"Reisen bildet" is my goto whenever talking about holidays/German culture

"man muss den Horizont erweitern" is another favorite.

    Du hättest weitersuchen sollen ;)

Not all of these are idioms per se, but most are, and they're all very useful. One I like that a German friend taught me is "was muss, das muss", which just means "needs must", but I think they use it more than us.

You don't need the idioms as much as in Irish (or French I dare say). In German you just need to get all your basics right, word order, pronunciations etc. Throw in a few additional adjectives and you'll get your full marks.

    Here are some general tips.
Know all the verbs. I learned a sheet of around 80 verbs last year in all the tenses. Took a while but was worth it.
In the exam papers write down any word you don't understand in a copy. Learn them all and use them.
Some idioms are nice but I don't think I used that many..
Remember your basics and get your tenses right!
Always answer the question asked as this is what they can give you marks for.
Know your role plays and picture stories word for word and all the questions and future projections.
Prepare every question they can ask you in the general conversation.

I did my oral last year and knew the answer to all the questions and everything rolled off my tongue exactly how I learned it. It is a great feeling coming out of the oral knowing you have done well so it is worth putting the work in now.

Hopefully you will be very erfolgreich in your exam :)
Also there is a nice llist of phrases in the front of the exam papers.
