I've been fishing here on the leixlip canal between carton house and up around intel for the last 3 weeks and I havn't got a single bite. What's going on with the canal !!! The fish are jumping in the evenings but not taking the bait. I've tried different baits ( maggot, worm, sweet corn, bread and used a spinner. Im looking to take my son fishing during the summer often but I'm looking for a good spot first. I'm living in leixlip

These people who are naitionals are doing it there killing every single fish they get, and there dumping there cans, and dumping anything else, now some of theses nationalists are good fishers and who realse what they catch but a lot of them don't, If I were you I'd try somewhere else, there's plenty of fisheries near you for rainbow trout you'l catch a lot and have good time and you'l be able to bring a few fish home for the table aswel so I think this would be a good idea, now I may be wrong but I would go to a fishery a few times so your son knows how to handle fish and how to fight them, there is a link of all put and take fisheries, some fisheries have a children's pond where they can catch them...
    Good luck

James, give us a few details, and we'll try and help

What size hooks are you using ?
What type/diameter Line are you using ?
What type (if any) of groundbait are you using ?
    Are you using floats ?
Are you just roaming the Bank ?

    Size 18 hook
    4lb mono line
Groundbait is a mix of maggot and corn
    Using clear waggler floats
I have 3 rods set up around 15 ft apart using different baits

You do know that it's a 2 rod limit per angler? You said you want to bring your son out during the summer, that would imply that you have been out on your own so using 3 rods at a time is illegal! Just sayin!

I had two rods float fishing and was spinning with the third. I wouldn't usually fish with three rods. Just the once. Cheers though I never knew it was illigal

When you are float fishing you need to stay with your rods. Bites could be just a little dip in the float or a sudden dive under but its not a bolt rig so fish wont hook them selves.

I wouldn't use corn this time of year. Get a bag of proper proprietary groundbait.

What would be a suitable groundbait?

No? What would you use instead? Is it just maggot & worm or are there other alternatives?
And, lastly, when does corn come on as a bait?

Summer moreso for corn but it's fine to use in my eyes at the moment.

Make your own groundbait out of any bread or meal based ingredients.

    below is good

    Porridge oats
    digestive biscuits
    Custard Creams (awesome stuff)
Blend em all together (use a blender)
    add corn
    add maggots
    add water
    make sticky
    get a feeder

Feed spot a few hrs or preferably over a few days to hold fish

This explains better but Graham is furiously annoying in this vid!!

I'd scale down the line a bit too James, try something like 2.5lb maxima, this can make a huge difference on Canals,

Also meant to say go into a decent tackle shop and buy a bag of groundbait, it's only about 4 - 5 euro a bag, the Tackle shop in Lucan should have a good selection, and don't be afraid to ask their advice on what to use and they'll also tell you where is fishing well at the minute
