I passed a road tonight and noticed 2 Herons just in off the road moving around a bunch of trees as if they were hunting. This was at 9:30pm - street lights were lighting up the area. Is this normal behaviour?

At ground level or high up in the trees?

If they were at ground level - Herons eat pretty much anything below a certain size, and the lights would provide possible feeding opportunities, so not too out of the ordinary!

Thanks for the response - at ground level. I guess like you say they were using the light to assist feeding. I've just never seen them around so late!

I'd say its one of those things that happens in a lot of well-lit towns and cities, but isn't necessarily seen too often. Certainly, there'd be the chance to catch invertebrates, frogs, small rodents etc. in those kinds of areas at night - and a meal is a meal, whenever it comes!
