It's down to rights as far as I know . Fair city was the same till they got agreement from actors union. RTE is not unique in this regard ITV and ch5 come to mind

Its an RTE series isn't it?. Also what difference does one hour make regarding rights?

Maybe they're only allowed to show it 5,000 times per year and the +1 channel would push them over the limit? :)

RTÉ doesn't own the music used on the show which is what I believe causes the problem.

This doesn't really ring true as RTÉ would have a rights agreement with music organisations for the whole organisation.

I think its more down to clips/stills not owned by RTÉ and indeed perhaps Equity.

RTÉ should not repeat the show so often.

Rte should show reeling in the years 1963-1999 on loop.

They were not allowed to release it on DVD as broadcast, I think a "best of" was eventually released.

Yeah it's an odd one given how incessantly it's repeated but there you go.

It also uses bits of music videos. And some of the actual clips belong to third party agencies and the clearance will have been for real-time TV only.

This is why the DVDs were remade completely. There's actually some new content on them, particularly the 1990s ones, as time going by made some stuff more relevant.
