I wouldn't jump straight to IPA's, might be a shock to system...(coming as recent ex-lager drinking)
some decent Irish beers' as suggestion below ...but really best thing is to get a few different bottles in a decent offie and see what type appeals best to you.

    Metalman Pale Ale
    8 Degrees Barefoot Bohemian
    Cottonball Indian Summer
    Mountain Man Green Bullet
    Munster Fir Bolg
    St Mel Helles

    or some American Pale Ale's
    laguintas New Dogtown Pale Ale
    Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
    Founder Pale Ale

Would any of Aldi's beers be worth trying? I live in Letterkenny and the big store off licenses are my only option.

Do they sell Spaaten or Pilsner Urquell?

The Pale Ale and Golden Ale are both quite nice.

The O'Sheas range are a good start as mentioned.

Noticed 3 of the Adnams range in my Aldi today which might suit you too. Also the Bru range of course.

They are all affordable and will help you sort out where your palate is at the moment.

Any idea what Adnams beers they have?

OP - go with O'Sheas Pale Ale, it's as good as 90% of Irish beers on the market and dirt cheap.

They had Explorer, Ghost Ship and Lighthouse.

Regarding O'Sheas Pale Ale being as good as 90% of Irish beers on the market, my palate wouldn't agree.

    But to each their own...

Was hoping they might have got Southwold Bitter in.

I miss this beer - the suppliers pulled the plug on it thanks to you imperial-barrel aged smoked Belgian porter drinking bastids...

I'll give that Explorer stuff a shot though.

Ended up having the Lighthouse and the Solas Stout the Lighthouse was ok but no more really enjoyed the Solas but think stout would only ever be an occasional drink for me am now enjoying a sneaky Jim Beam.

Adnams Ghost Ship Pale Ale is an excellent example of the style & is available in Aldi for €2.29 per 500ml bottle.

Nicer than O'Shea's Pale Ale IMHO, but in fairness, taste is subjective.

Bought some of this to try last weekend and although its nice I find the o shea's nicer on the palate.

O'Sheas Traditional Golden Ale was awful to be honest weird taste and only drank half of it.

O'Haras Irish Red very nice a bit of a stout flavour from it will buy again.

will try a few pale ales next week.

There are lots of nice "craft" lagers out there to try too. Harvistouns, a scotish brewery, do a really nice one with a name I can't remember how to spell for the life of me but it starts with an S.

Bo bristle Pilsner or Cotton balls lagers are two very good irish craft lagers IMO
