How to work out golf handicap

Can anybody here help with this. My partner has just joined a golf club and is doing his final card today. He is trying to work out what his likely handicap would be.
I've done a quick search here but to be honest I'm absolutely clueless so it's all double Dutch to me. I'm just looking for a number. I thought it was par minus your average score but seemingly not.

Eta: He hit a 108, 113 and 96 (the 113 was on his own so won't go towards it, but based on those what is likely?)

Every club does it slightly different - some might only offer 18 max for a man while others will offer greater.

Thanks Keano, I think they said the max is 24 for men, you wouldn't like to hazard a guess would you?

Anything worse than a double bogey will be marked back to a double bogey, the three cards will be looked at and if he had a birdie or two or a string of pars or form on high index pars then this will also be taken into account.

I believe the 113 would have been tossed anyways. Having shot a 96, I'd be very surprised if he was given a 24 handicap. maybe closer to 20

Cheers Rikand, he'll be very impressed with that, he was expecting a max handicap as it's his first time to apply for a handicap, he has only played a few rounds in different courses before.
Just wait and see how he goes now today. :)

    I'll guess 18-21 handicap

Ah foreright that's a big margin there, narrow it down and see if you're right.

I'll find out how he's getting on now.

Normally 3 cards, everything over a double will revert back and the best front 9 and back 9 from the 3 cards will be used.

When I put in 3 cards at first think they were around 98, 103 & 105 & I was given 22 if that's any kind of gauge (i know some clubs methodologies will vary somewhat)

Will hopefully know by the end of the week, shall keep you informed. Thanks everyone for indulging me. I'm just delighted for him that he has found something for him that he really enjoys.

Reckon 20 or 21 based on the best two cards
