Hi, I don't know much about cars so bear with me. I'm looking to buy my first car no particular model just want to get on the road asap there's a honda civic 1.4 near me for sale with good NCT i'm thinking about but somebody said i shouldn't get 1.4 & that 1.0 or 1.1 would be much cheaper, why is this? I'm female & learner driver

Have you priced insurance on any of these type cars yet? If not then that is where you should start as usually insurance is expensive for learner drivers so what you can afford to pay for insurance has a bearing on what car you buy.

Also insurance companies and Honda Civics don't go well together. Because of the boy racer image the Civic has insurance companies tend to charge more on them. Cars like a Yaris or Micra generally tend to have lower insurance prices.

A Renault Clio is a good little car to start driving in. They come with a peppy little 1.2l engine. You could get a quate with insurance companys about the price on one of them. A Fiat Punto is another good car. A Seat Ibiza and a VW Polo are all worth a look and a quate from insurance companys too. When you know how much your tax and insurance is going to cost then you will have better idea of how much you are going to spend on buying your first car and what it is going to be.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Definitely get online quotes for insurance. Be wary of things like when the car reaches 20 years old the quotes can be loaded because of this.

Ring one or two insurers and ask about quotes on various engine sizes. It'll give you an indication of what things cost.
Then start looking at 1 litre cars :)

For first car my opinion is, the smaller the better. It's cheap to buy and run and you can park better and such.
All the while you can save up for a bigger car and once you have plenty ncb and a bunch of cash go for a bigger car.
