I am in semester 2 of my 1st year in college, it is a Level 8 course with a duration of 4 years. However I do not like what I am doing and I would like to change over to a course that covers the same elements in Years 1 and 2 as the course I am doing now does - however the course I would like to transfer to is a level 6. Would I lose my Grant Payment if I were to do so? Or would it be ok?

The course I am currently doing is Accounting & Finance. I really dislike the Accounting part but thankfully you don't really specialise in this subject until Years 3 and 4. I would like to transfer into the Level 6 Business course - I looked into it and the first and 2nd year of this course covers the exact same material as the course I am in currently so I wouldn't need to repeat Year 1, I could go directly into Year 2.

I am just wondering would I lose my grant?

Don't know, but I would assume so since it's a lower level and you've already part completed the first year of the level 8 degree. Though you may only have to cover the first semester before the grant takes over again in semester 2? No idea.

But bear in mind, even if the level 6 one covers exactly the same stuff as the level 8 one, you'll be applying for jobs in competition with people who have level 8 degrees, often Masters degrees too. It may not be worth your while dropping down to a level 6.

Thank you for the feedback, I know where you're coming from in saying it may not be worth my while dropping. However I really dislike the course I am in now - mainly the Accounting part, and I know it's only going to get harder and harder each year. If I'm struggling in Year 1 I think I'll find it extremely difficult and stressful in Years 3&4.
I don't want to drop out of college completely, I just don't want to waste 4 years doing something I hate. I would rather do 2 years, have the Level 6 qualification and then maybe go and do a course in something I enjoy and would like a career in for the rest of my life. At this time however I wouldn't be able to afford to go to college if I were to lose my grant so hopefully I'll be able to sort something!
    Thanks again!

Would you consider changing to a Level 8 Business course?

Are you doing Accounting & Finance in Maynooth?
If so it is possible to change over to the Business and Management course, and you would get exemptions from modules already covered and passed in Accounting & Finance. You may have 30-40 credits already completed that would crossover with Business and Management.

As you have completed/are in process of completing first year, you wouldn't get the grant for first year again, and would have to fees for the remaining modules credits to make up the 60 credits in first year. But would be eligible for the grant in the second year of new course.

It may be worth asking would you be able to change into second year of a Business course, then I'd say you be eligible for the grant right away, definitely worth asking if you aren't happy with your current course.

Feel free to pm me as I went through something similar as did some of my friends.
