Are you sure it's the nuts? What age are they?

at this time of year we switch from calf crunch to calf pencils/nuts as the crows are feckers for taking the crunch but as greysides says it mightnt be the meal causing the scour

We found that nice fresh rolled barley seems very attractive to them and is a great starter, then mix in regular beef nut, moving to full beef nut.

Occasional scour but nothing serious down the years..

Same as that , they actually eat the rolled barley first before they look at calf crunch if you throw out the two either side of the trough. It doesn't say much for the calf crunch IMO .

What nuts are you giving your cows?
We found giving beef nut to cows can cause this

Liffey 18 % ration while on milk & then Roches Super calf nut when weaned

We always start them off with crunch (Lakelands) then after a week we mix rolled barley that we buy in bulk from Gilsenans near Oldcastle.
Agree with Brian that Lakelands crunch is dusty but 1) it is the only one available in our area and 2) when mixed with the barley there is less waste.
We keep them on a taste of barley while on grass during the summer and then add a beef nut coming into winter. We rear FR bull calves and find that this system works best for us.

They maybe gorging on the pencils and it is upsetting their system. Maybe give them some hay or barley straw to nip at. If they were mine and that happened I would reduce the pencils and add a bit of crunch and/or barley.

What I was thinking of was coccidiosis. Maybe they're a little young but watch for mucus in the dung and straining. Base Price suggestions are worth considering.
