Smoking in the petrol station

Was getting diesel this evening. On the way in to pay there was a group of 5 teenagers doing the usual sh1te they do, standing around in the middle of the area where you fill the car with fuel aimlessly. Anyway, none of my business except one of the dopes was smoking!

Now I'm no interfering biddy but I thought FFS. I skipped the que to pay and told the lad at the till. Basically ignored me cos I went back into the que to pay.

Anyway, how dangerous is it. Was I over reacting? I'd images of the place going up like die hard! Tbf a bit like going for a p1ss, you'll get a bit of leakage from the fuel nozzle, so I imagine if the fag was thrown away and hit that things would've been messy. The guy seemed blazee enough about it. Does he know something I dont?

First off, I think the fuel vapours are the main ignition risk, so its not an emergency situation unless the person who is filling up is smoking.

    Second,
I've never seen teenagers hanging about on a forecourt other than near the shop. And even then its just been while waiting for their mate to come out, they would not be loitering on forecourts in my experience. So this place has a problem if they are hanging about near the pumps. I would avoid the station then.

The real problem is that Feral teenagers are untouchable, its really hard to do anything about them.
Particularly if they know where you live or where you park your car..

I've seen plenty teenagers loitering at forecourts usually at the door of the shop.

Tbf to these guys they weren't the sinister looking ones with the trackies tucked into their white socks. Harmless enough....except for the one potential fire hazard. Never came across it before...

I can imagine telling my insurance company that smoking a cig doesn't ignite petrol when some clown blows up my petrol station because I let him smoke

I'm sure they would be fine with it

It's very unlikely a cigarette will cause a petrol station fire.
But tbh the little scrote probably didn't know that. Get him with a fire extinguisher.

Personally, I would use the extinguisher on him, but each to his own.

I was filing up in Mullingar last year when a car full of our local mobile community members rocked up in an old primera, all discs had 2010 dates on them, was seemed like a football team of loose kids in the back and the Ma jumps out starts putting the hose in, she's smoking already. I'm planning my escape. The cashier won't turn on the pump for her and the fury begins. The abuse she gave the attendant was shocking. Lovely person.

A lit cigarette cannot ignite petrol liquid. It possibly could ignite petrol vapour but on a fuel station forecourt the vapour partial pressure would not be high enough for this to happen. The flame from a match or lighter certainly could though, so it while it would be dangerous to light up there is no danger in actually smoking on the forecourt.

Chances are the scrote lit up right at the station

Years ago there was a petrol pump at a shop in the town that I come from. They guy who owned the shop almost always had a cig in his mouth when he was serving petrol.

You make it sound like he was behind a counter pouring cans of Dutch gold into dirty glasses.

Yeah, in France (>10 years ago) I was served by an garage attendant that smoked while filling car up.

I just waited across the road :D

Not so much a problem in Ireland, in NL though I saw a guy filling his car while smoking a fag and the car next to him was filling with LPG.

I just drove off and didn't bother waiting :pac:
