Is it a petrol or diesel ?
A faulty coil pack on petrol engine can give similar symptoms. It's a cheap enough fix.
Have the fault codes read it will point you in right direction.

Any warning lights on the car? Have you checked the oil level?

Sounds like coil packs. The severity of it makes you think car goosed. Quick and quite cheap fix.

Fingers crossed that it's as simple as coil packs.

Could be a lot of things, when did you last fill up, possible fuel contamination?

List of possible causes from a BMW forum ( no logical order )
    Vacuum leak
    MAF
    CCV
    O2 sensors (pre-cat)
    Air filter
    Idle Control Valve (IVC)
    Camshaft position sensor (CPS)
    VANOS seals
    Bad coils (post 150k miles?)
    Fuel filter.
    Valve cover gasket leak
    Blown head gasket

Best get the codes sorted first

Put petrol in it about a week ago when it was near empty so that would rule that out I think, best to get it checked alright, anybody know good mobile mechanic?

update: had the mechanic look at it tonight, looks like it the timing chain is knackered after reading codes, looks like its gonna cost more than coils ha
