I would like to get the rear brakes on my car changed from the present drums to discs. Is this even possible and, if so, what would be the approximate costs? Your opinions are welcome.

    I think it's an N15 Almera?

    As Lightning said, why bother?

Without knowing the make and model to be more specific, you'll have to change hubs (possibly rear arms), handbrake cable, plumbing, master cylinder (or bias valve install). If the car has ABS, you've got wiring, ABS module etc to worry about.

Then you've got to tell your insurance as you've modified the car.

All that when the rear brakes generally do between 10% and 25% of the work.

It's an 04 Almera. I suppose I'm just looking for improved and quieter braking but it would seem not to be a realistic undertaking.

I think it's quite unrealistic. Make sure the existing shoes, drums, and hydraulic cylinders are in good order. They're plenty able to do the job.

For better brake pedal feel, change the fluid. Check everything for wear or damage and change as needed. For quieter braking, assuming pads or shoes are not down to the metal refit the pad shims.

I had one of them for a while and the only brake problems I had was overheating brakes coming down the Healy Pass when competing on a retro trial.
