Hi guys. Quick question if i may. I have been out of work for far too long but thankfully i have just been offered a job running a small shop in town that sells various electronic goods.

Iam feeling a tad bit nervous as ive been out of work so long and i have no experience in retail and using a cash register etc

I somewhat know the person that offered me the job and they are insisting it's a all a piece of piss but have yet to explain what my exact duties will be etc

Any advice for me in relation to working in retail. Is using a cash register / doing refunds etc easy? Iam sure ye don't need to be a brain surgeon to pick it up but would you need to be shown how to use it or is it so easy a child could do it?

What other duties might be involved that i should also be aware of?

Sales are always good to know. However with retail the biggest skill you will need is tact and diplomacy when it comes to talking to the idiots who don't know what they don't know.

I have over 10 years experience in retail from sales assistant to management positions, it's easy once you're not an idiot.

In terms of using the cash register for sales/refunds just take your time and don't panic. Customers would prefer to get the proper refund/ correct change than be wronged. If this new job has modern tills they usually take you through what you need to do anyway.

I imagine you will just stocking shelves, facing (moving products to the front of the shelf) and answering questions for the first few weeks anyway. Eventually you will be shown how to use a till. Its pretty simple after you are trained on it. If you just small talk with the customers, they dont care if you are not the quickest. Most places dont allow you to make refunds without a managers consent. So dont worry about them yet.

You'll be fine. Tills are like any other device, after you spend some time with it and get to know it's basic, everyday functions it will eventually become second nature to you. I imagine some training will be provided at least. Just relax and ease into it. Rome wasn't built in a day. Good luck.

Anybody know anything about x's and o's when working part time btw?

Iam told you can work 3 days and still claim 130 from the social regardless of how many hours you do?

Another person says that if ur unemployed a while then there's a part time work scheme that you can do for awhile that is a better option with regards to social welfare benefits??
