Have spotted a car for sale from private seller. Its a company car from uk imported to ireland in 2011 with a fair amount of work done..ie. new flywheel..clutch..timing chain...
    It has 144, 000miles...

is it crazy to even consider such a car... (12,000euro)...?

    Thanking you!

    Thanking you!

timing chain is a known issue in the 5 2008 onwards...

the chain is not capable of the job it has to do and as a result it can go at any stage. A mechanic friend was telling me that because the sprocket is part of the crankshaft (milled out of the same piece) that if the sprocket gets worn down the whole shaft has to be replaced. BMW might have changed this, but i would be very wary. if the sprocket is worn down the chain is more likely to go, but who knows. some 5s go years without trouble and others give constant problems! One or two friends have never had an issue but another has replaced the chain 3 times along with starter and a heap of bulbs!
