What is the rule about cars with big wheels having enough clearance? How would you know if they had enough clearance and what is the danger if they don't

    Rollin rollin
    Rollin on a river...

Clearance of what? What's the rule you've heard?

If they're too big, they could foul the bodywork/chassis at full lock or when hitting bumps

Yeah but that's more a rule of common sense more than anything isnt it? As long as they don't protrude beyond the arches like.

Saw a fella in Patrickswell in limerick with the wheels fouling on the arch liners. Making a plastic rubbing noise up through the village. What a cool guy.

But is it not a danger too? If they hit bodywork they could cause an accident? How would you know to look if they were too big?

Even if they don't protrude beyond the arches, there are other things the tyres can catch on on the inside

Usually owners clubs/websites will have found out what fits what at this stage. They'll know what size tyres you can get away with in specific cars with specific suspension setups.

FWIW, big wheels on normal cars aren't that cool anymore

If ya can't afford to put decent brand rubber on em you've gone too big!

Naw it depends on the car and suspension what will fit without rubbing.

Usually they (whoever they are) recommend you stay within a certain limit of the original circumference but that's mainly so your speedo isn't a mile out.

I would say if they are rubbing when driving in a straight line they are probably to big.

What would you be wanting to put huge wheels on a car for. So impractical and pointless.
