Windshield adhesive without primer

So my box liner flew out of my pickup truck the other day. Turns out it was only held in there with some 3M tape.... I'm gonna be sticking it back in tonight, I got myself some Pro Form PF255 windshield adhesive, should keep it in there for good. When I was reading the back I noticed it says to use a primer. I'm gonna be sticking it back in tonight, I got myself some Pro Form PF255 windshield adhesive, should keep it in there for good. When I was reading the back I noticed it says to use a primer. Is this necessary when bonding painted metal to plastic?
