Just seeing this on the news and talking with friends about it the consensus seems to be that it is a little excessive.

Surely the boyfriends / girlfriends are the ones who should shoulder the majority of the blame here.

I realise he took payment in exchange for removal of the images and videos, but it wasn't illegal for him to post them in the first place.

Were a celebrity to leak a sex tape, I'm sure the Joe Soap or Jane Doe would get named along no doubt with images of the tape printed for weeks or the months ahead. Doubt the editor would then get jail time on the back of that.

As I say, be interested to hear other view points.

From the site you linked it was for "21 felony counts of identity theft and six counts of extortion", which doesn't seem like he harmlessly hosted a website with a few photos. He deserved what he got by the sounds of it.

Exactly, he extorted $30,000 from people. Sounds like an absolute prick, willing to destroy people's reputations and humiliate them. I concur, he deserves the sentence.

But why did he get what he deserved. Was it justice by the books or politics based sentencing.

He extorted money to remove images posted. Blackmail is a serious offence.

Plus he's immoral scum and deserves every day of that sentence.

They're no different than this utter scumbag IMO. To do that to another person is utterly despicable.

I realise he took payment in exchange for removal of the images and videos, but it wasn't illegal for him to post them in the first place.

It wasn't illegal for him to host them, but he didn't just host them. These people's images were published without their consent, and then the victim would have to pay to have the site owner take the images down. It would be the equivalent of the red top rags bribing celebrities who would have to pay up if they didn't want their sex tape released to the public.

That's why the investigation into the antics of the News of the World journalists is ongoing, and numerous paper editors have been forced to resign for similar behaviour - Piers Morgan getting sacked from the Daily Mail is just one example.

It would be different if he just had a hosting site that people happened to use for this purpose. He didn't.

He created a site which existed solely to publish compromising pictures of exes.

So not only was he publishing these pictures intentionally and maliciously, he was also inciting others to distribute these pictures to him, to be published.

18 years maybe a little harsh, but certainly a long stretch in prison is not.

I could be wrong, but this was in the US - from what I hear it's entirely common for prisoners to serve half or less of their sentence. Not that 9 years isn't a long time...

I don't get what you mean. He committed extortion and identity theft, was found guilty and got the sentence representative of the crime.

I, personally have no sympathy for this person.

For no other reason than personal profit he destroyed the lives of thousands of people.

He did this repeatedly, in full knowledge of the pain he was causing.

He was under no duress to do so, the pr**k took pleasure in it.

    Quote...
Unlike many other revenge porn websites where the subject of the photos is anonymous, ugotposted.com required that the poster include the subject’s full name, location, age and Facebook profile link. As a result, the victims experienced severe harassment through social media, at their places of work and in other communities.

Bollaert created a second website, changemyreputation.com, in October 2012, which he used when individuals contacted ugotposted.com requesting that content be removed from the site. Bollaert would extort victims by replying with a changemyreputation.com email address and offering to remove the content for a fee ranging from $250 to $350, which could be paid using an online PayPal account referenced in the emails. Bollaert told investigators that he made around $900 per month from advertising on the site and records obtained from his changemyreputation.com PayPal account indicate that he received payments totaling approximately $30,000.

I don't think it's harsh, especially since he'll probably serve half that.

He didn't stumble into this, even the name of the site is a clear indication of what's going on. "You got posted". It's a taunt.

And making it so the photos are accompanied by personal information? That's incredibly dangerous. There are so many fcuking nutjobs out there who will just show up at people's houses.

Should of got longer in my opinion, not only posting their pictures but name, Facebook address and phone numbers.
After the pictures were posted some people lost jobs, tried to commit suicide and even families broke up.
Then after his trial this loser had the audacity to want his photo removing off line !

Hes a Scumbag but 18 years seems a bit harsh. I think 5 to 8 years would have been more suitable to the crime.

Absolute scum. Deserves the sentence absolutely.

    He's ruined multiple lives. Deliberately.

A bank robber causes less harm than this prick.

The lenient sentences that some murderers get is irrelevant to this case. That is a whole other issue. I think the length of this man's sentence fits the crime.

But he caused someone to try to kill themselves, and by posting their address etc he could of caused multiple murders

The photo of him sitting crying in the courtroom didn't move me one inch. I'm sure the victims of his website cried much much more.
