I've a couple of heifers I want to get in calf via AI.
Is there a good way to know when they're in season?
I know I could get a vasectomised bull and chalk them - wondering if there are other ways to tell.

Run a young weanling bull with them.

You need to be seeing them several times a day. You need to religiously record details, and use your records to preempt activity.

I've often noticed that the heifer doing the chasing and mounting is often the next to come bulling. So pay close attention for this.
The odd heifer heads off alone looking over the hedge when she's coming round.
Any heifer that is Ai'd, be shocking vigilant at day 20/21 and again 3 weeks later.

Often notice a swab from them about a day before thry come into heat. They're have their ears back and looking 'up for action' if you get my drift. We whistle at them, think it's an old fashioned thing but it seems to encourage them to mount others.
