hi folks, car is 08 vw touran 1.9 tdi. A horse shoe piece of coil spring fell out. Found it and its the top piece from the front drivers side. Its solid but a part with small bearings is askew. Will try and load a photo.

    Questions
    Will golf springs fit?
Can I drive short journey assuming take it handy?

    Cheers

I don't know. But there are online parts catalogues you can lookup for part numbers to compare them.

    With taking extreme care, yes.

Cheers, it's out now and shock is OK but coil and top end needs replacement. Got to breakers and their checking now before they close. Could be stuck in New Ross till Tues. Was meant to be heading back to Dublin Sun night.

You could be better off buying new and changing both sides when you are at it .

Cheers, was lucky to get the second hand part as every other place closed until Tues morn and only then could order so had no choice.

I understood that if shocks were broke then replace both sides. Is it the same for springs/top mount and what's the rational, thanks as I know very little and am keen to learn.

Yes, it is exactly the same for springs, but not really necessary for top mount. :)

Springs go weak over time with use . one spring could be very soft/weak and the other stiff. plus you can get heavy duty ones which would be stiffer to start with

Just to add have Touran 07 and the same situation - this week have front Coil spring snapped on half...

Jut to add I'd only buy springs from VW by the cars vin number, that way you will have the correct spring rate for the spec of the car. There would be different spring rates for different engines/suspension spec.
Springs are identified by coloured paint on the coils, they need to match what's fitted to the car.

Buying from a motor factors could leave you with generic ones.

Had this problem on my wife's previous car - Audi A2. It only happened on the front - 3 times over 6 years on alternating sides. They are prone to it. I just changed the one that broke and had no issues. I always went for the genuine Audi part. Not a huge outlay for a spring so not worth going the non-OEM route.
