Folks, anyone much experience with these? Wonder how many bales per day would make it a worthwhile investment.

They can be used as a normal shear grab too can't they?

Lastly, how many horsepower would ya need to work one safely?

I wouldn't accuse you of being smart! Couldn't you post that as the first reply to most threads

That said i had a good look at your link and it was informative though didn't see the hp needed

I would think that when u say hp you mean bulk size of tractor. Wat weight is the machine without bale. Say a 700 kg bale plus the weight of machine at least a tonne then that's a lot of weight for we wil call it 100 hp tractor.

Mchale bales are hitting 850-900kgs these days. Many of the bale shears are working on diggers or loaders. Any on a tractor seem to to be bigger 6 pot tractors with weight boxes on the back.

What do you have at the moment?

I have a bale shear on a ts115 with quicke loader and i can handle bales without weight on the back but only on level ground. Would prefer weight on the back most times. Bale shears are about 450kg empty so you'd be over the ton with most bales in them. I never used it on pit silage but its well able to chop bales up into several pieces so its like a shear grab. As for no. of bales required i'd say you'd want to be using bales every day of the winter to justify one so couple of hundred at least.

I think if you only have one bale to feed on a Sunday it's worth it!
