Sign into Chrome, but don't sync

Since I've rescued an old PC, I want to get my copy of Chrome up to the place it is on my other PCs. There's a ton of old bookmarks and rubbish on the one on the resurrected PC (apt!) and I suspect if I sign into Chrome, it's just going to copy all that crap to everywhere else. Does anyone know if it's possible to sign into, but do a read only sync or something?

I would uninstall chrome and there should be an option to delete all the settings and bookmarks while uninstalling. Then just reinstall chrome and log in and sync.
