Drawing 101

I wouldn't normally consider myself very artistic, in fact my handwriting is barely legible, but I would like to do try some drawings, broad strokes rather than very detailed images, in black and white if possible, and unleash my inner talents :)

I gather I'd need a pencil and paper but I would be interested as well in alternative approaches like using charcoal or multi-shaded crayons or some such.

What tips would you have for a complete novice who just wants to experiment and have fun?!
