I think you need to be a little realistic here, your average 14 year old car is going to have more than 110k miles on it at this stage so putting that limitation on your search could rule out alot of half decent cars. Anyway on a car of that age current condition is far more important than what the odometer reads.

The 2001 to 2004 1.4 Civics can suffer from gearbox bearing failure as it's a known issue. The power steering can also give trouble, other than that they are a good car.

The Corolla is a good car too but ones of that vintage have been known to burn a bit of oil. They are nipper than a similar 1.4 Civic but the body design and interior are less modern.

the bangernomics thread is exactly what you need

Leaving the whole Roma/collision/ring Gardai mess aside.

    As said, the bangernomics thread.
If you want a "cheap to buy/expensive to own" car the luxobarge is the way to go.

Ah fair enough so u wouldn't be too worried lookin at 140000 on corolla or civic other than the problems u mentioned , corolla probably better choice !!

Weeks of nct on it. Why bother. 1.6 isn't even that powerful in them.

milage is extremely low on that - under 6 thousand per year - you would think at least one of the owners would have been doing average milage at some stage over the 14 years

Would be a much better option than the golf imo.
if it was me id be looking to find the best minded corolla i could find.
Ive seen a good few 1.4 Golfs of that vintage that broke their owners heart

I'd have much more faith in a Focus of that vintage over a similar petrol Golf. Those petrol Golfs are nothing special, they can burn alot of oil and the gearboxes are weak.

Aren't ford parts cheap and easily found? That's been my experience of them anyway.
Honda parts prices are crazy though.

I doubt someone looking for a 1.4/1.6 litre car is going to be interested in a 2.0/2.2 litre one. And if he finds Ford parts expensive then BMW parts are hardly going to be appealing.

If you are talking about genuine parts I found with ford that service items, such as oil, filters, plugs etc are cheap but beyond that they are just as expensive as anyone else, even honda.

Also in regards to what another poster said, a saloon civic of that era doesn't suffer from gearbox issues, just the hatchback. E12 corollas aren't oil burners either. Both are better cars than a golf or focus where reliability is concerned.
