He was bit more than that. Writer for the Herald, former writer for the Independent and Hot Press. Well respected.

He was very passionate about football, especially Shamrock Rovers, but more importantly, he was a big fan of the band, The Fall. One of the good lads, I reckon.

    RIP

He was a big fan of REM in their early days back in the 80s too when they were at their best.
Often saw him at gigs around Dublin back in the day.

    RIP

This came as quite a shock. I'm an occasional listener to Tom Dunne's show so it only seemed like yesterday that he was doing film reviews on that. I didn't always agree with George but he was never boring. Donald Clarke's write-up about him in the Irish times was nice. I loved the last line "I have just noticed that he’s trending on Twitter. He’d have f**king hated that."

Yes and he also hated The Frames as well! I liked his film reviews on Tom Dunne's show, seems to have been complications from a stroke. Rip Georgio!

I would not normally be in this particular forum but I have to say a few words about George Byrne. I remember him as a brilliant music critic in the papers. I saw him a few times on the TV. He was also a regular contributor to "The Sunday Supplement" on Radio Ireland/Today FM, for its first year (1997-1998). There was never a dull moment with opinionated, but intelligent, George.

And let's not forget that he also was one of the question setters for the schools quiz show "Blackboard Jungle"!

The last time I heard him was earlier this year I think on Tom Dunne's show. Unfortunately, I did not get chance to hear very often in recent years, but he will be missed.

I forgot to mention something that happened to me more than 20 years ago. George Byrne mentioned a benefit music quiz in his rock column. Being a fan myself of both music and quizzes, I assembled a team together. This took place in Barry's Hotel. I knew we were not going to win when I saw a team beside us that included Ian Dempsey, Larry Gogan and John Clarke! They were not the only media/entertainment luminaries in the room either! But at the end of the night, who was the captain of the winning team? Yes, that's right - George Byrne!
