1-6-15 I am going to declare my car off the road for maybe 2 years.

    Today I failed NCT.

    question 1 :
Do I have to pass the NCT or can I make my next NCT in 2017 ?

    question 2 :
If I pass my re-test NCT, do I have to do NCT every Year if my car will be off the road ?

    Thanks for any help

    What year is the car?
    When is your NCT expiring?

You can let test lapse if car is off the road.
When you want to get back on the road, book a new test well in advance.
You will only get new cert in 17 up to anniversary date of your car so depending on when you test it, you could get a very short or full length cert.

I'm not so sure on the legalities of driving an out of test car to the test centre.

Yes I will be driving, but I live in small town, I drive only to work 4 minutes, and I wasn´t stopped by Garda in last 5 Years.

    Plus 3 points in licence.
Get test passed. Anything else is just messing.

    Brilliant thread.
Shows up what rural Ireland is and how it works.
Same in my place. I'm certain I have greater chance of winning a lotto than encountering road check.

So it's over a year out of NCT already.

If you do NCT in 2017 (anytime of the year) you will get your NCT valid until 31-3-2018.

If you're declaring it off the road on 1st June, presumably the tax is up at the end of May? Do you not have to declare it off the road before the tax is up? (ie on the 31st May, to start on 1st June?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 105 ✭✭allsam18

Yes I will make the declaration off the road in May, and my tax will expire 31-5-15.

A 2000 car that is currently needing money to pass test might be best sold on instead of storing and then needling even more money to make it road legal in 2017 when it will have little value. Unless of course it's something alittle special.

Yes, it is special, I am emotionally attached to my car.
