It's pretty much a Ford Focus with more expensive suspension and the same fragile 1.6 Diesel engine thst needs to be religiously maintained. It isn't heavy or thirsty, but get a wrongun and it'll bleed you dry.

Run a mile. Lovely car to drive and super comfortable and good looking but that engine at that age you don't want. I spent 1000s literally on an 05 one I had. Broke my heart. Every thing that went wrong was all 100s of euro. They are notorius and even a well serviced one at that age i'd be very wary of too.
Egr valves, rocker cover gaskets, turbo pipes all give grief.

Had one of these a good few years ago. Lovely car, great build quality and very comfortable but I was nearly always spending money on it, not huge amounts at a time but after a while it added up to a substantial amount. While it shares alot with the Focus some of the parts are unique to Volvo and ain't cheap. 1.6d has no guts in the S40 for whatever way Volvo tuned it and unless it has been maintained meticulously it has the potential to break your heart.

If I was back again I'd go for the 2.0L version. Think it's actually fairly reliable and more powerful. Hardly much in difference in mpg as it's not exactly a light car.
