Stuck on USA keyboard on MAC OSX...

I have a mac mini running OSX 10.9 and I've plugged a Dell keyboard into it, I've selected Ireland in the 'Input Sources' but it just stays on USA, with the " and @ swapped around. I wouldn't mind that too much but I can't find the # anywhere. I need to copy and paste it from somewhere to get one.

I did the usual googling around and it just says to set the keyboard in system-prefs-keyboard which I've already done.

Ctrl and the number 3 should get you #

    Try Alt 3

The modifier keys on Macs and PCs aren't the same.

You'd be better off with a keyboard that shows which keys are which :) a lot of 3rd party keyboards have Apple keys marked on.
