Defective Vision (the vision standard required of a Garda Trainee is not less than 6/18, 6/18 (correctable to 6/9, 6/12) unaided by glasses or contact lenses, with normal colour vision)

I have double vision because of a squint. Would that rule me out? I passed the eyesight test for the RDF.

I reckon u should be fine, if it was ok for the rdf. Could anyone tell me what does the fractions mean or what is the equivalent decimal measure??? Cheers

  • On wikipedia there's a topic about that - look up "Visual acuity". I've tried to paste a link here, but it won't let me post it as I'm a new user :(

Also there's a table on Wikipedia with the equivalents in different measurement scales ( ft / metric / decimal / log ). Hope that helps.

Just wondering if your eyes don't meet the requirment what are your options? or are you just rejected?

I've no idea about the 6/18 thing but I've seen many Gardai wearing glasses so I'm assuming you'd wanna be near blind not to pass it?..

You're given a chance to get laser eye surgery to correct it!

Does anyone know anything about the colour vision test? I failed the test badly in Specsavers.

It's on the website. Also you will have to look into laser eye surgery as you haven't got a hope of getting in if you have glasses. I did it 2 years ago and it's the best thing I ever did.

Is this a reply to my post? You can't "cure" colourblindness so laser eye surgery is not an option. Have you done the medical?

I see plenty of Gardai with glasses?

This is an email I received from Garda HQ

    Good afternoon,
In answer to your query regarding colour vision.
Failure of colour vision in itself does not prevent you from joining An Garda Síochána.
The test would depend on you reaching the required eyesight standard of a minimum of 6/18 in each eye – this must be brought up to 6/9 and 6/12 with or without the aid of lenses with no other eyesight complications.
I hope this is clear enough for you. If you have any other problems just give me a shout

So they do accept colour blind people:eek: I'd imagine your eye sight would wanna be very, very bad not to pass?

I know 2 local Gardai who wear glasses all the time and they are very young so I reckon it shouldnt be a problem lads..

As far as I've read you have to pass or correct your eyesight to pass the medical. Your two local Garda could have passed the medical but then needed glasses later in life

But i'm sure you can still pass if your wearing glasses.. Surely having glasses isnt an automatic fail...

These requirements are never very clear and then it gets more confusing as you talk about them :o:o
