Any ideas of a cheap or cheapish estate that will comfortably sleep 2 people?

Merc W123 and W124 will fit you, as will a Peugeot 505. This I know from experience, though these can be hard or impossible to get.

If you're doing this a lot then consider a proper van, especially if you might be carrying some gear.

A Scudo size up will fit you, as will anything of the size of a Hiace.

You might also consider an MPV such as a Ford Galaxy/Peugeot 806 sized one.

Not sure if you'd fit into a Berlingo with the seats folded, I think you would.
