Old heating timer, doesn't work. Options?

Just moved in to a new house. It has Old heating and also a boiler upstairs.
    I have just two questions.

    1. The timer on my oil powered heating is old and doesn't seem to work. The boost button does seem ok but the timer seems to have a mind of it's own.
Can you recommend a replacement and can I fit it myself? I'm handy enough so dont mind doing a bit of fixing etc. For the recommendation,
I'd like one that had wireless if not to expensive. That's optional and not necessary if it costs a packet as it's a rented place and I can't see the landlord paying for it.
    So cheap and cheerful please.

    2. The oil heating heats the house nicely, however it doesn't heat the water? Is this normal? There is a boiler upstairs, I think that heats the water in the house
but I've never been in a place where the water is not heated by whatever is heating the rads'.

    Thanks

Yes ,you need a new timer. You should get your landlord to replace it.you should not be changing it yourself,If anything goes wrong you are liable. If you can take a picture of the copper cylinder and any valves going to it, we might be able to help you as to why the water is not heating

ok, I can get those pics tonight, I'll also get the other heater that's upstairs. For the moment I've turned the thermostat down to min so the heating is not just on all the time.

They landlord is happy to replace the unit and is getting a guy out. I was just wondering if WIFI is available for this unit. I can add a few quid to whatever
she's buying and get a decent one.

The simplest on–off wifi I have come across is the Wemo from Belkin.

This is the full set up, as you see I've unplugged the heater as it's just running all the time.
If I get a wifi plug for this would that do? Although I still think it's better if the LL just wires a new one in.
Not sure how long that's going to take.

On the face of it, it looks like you could plug in a Wemo (which also has settable times through the app) to the socket and then plug that plug into it. Then set you old timer to manual on, assuming that manual on works. Then you can use the app to set times, or just use it to turn it on and off.

This suggestion is based on what you have said and what I can see in the pics. As for the hot water, I don't know why it doesn't work. As said already, get the landlord to fix it and run the Wemo idea by him before fitting it.
Post a pic of this other boiler you mentioned.

thanks, I like the Wemo idea and am happy to buy it, she will replace the controller I'm pretty sure.

Is there any issue with the fact that Ive unplugged the gas boiler and left the pump plugged in?

There may be. You need to ask the owner about it.
What is that pump doing? Is it just for the hot water?

I think it's just pumps the water to the radiators.

I think it's just pumps the water to the radiators.

So what does the pump on the oil boiler do? Are they wired so that both boilers can't be on at the same time? It needs looking at by somebody who understands what' what.

Yeah, idk, I was told one plug was for the boiler and the other for the pump.
I just unplugged the one for the boiler. Normally both were plugged in. Then that controller was wire into where they're plugged in.

Do you mean oil boiler?when you unplug the oil boiler you unplug the pump or the pump would be running continously if the time clock is turned on.what boiler did you mention upstairs,I dont think we quite understand what you mean by boiler upstairs?
Is your boiler upstairs actually the copper cylinder and immersion..

Hi, I just unplugged one, I didn't realize, because of the way it's wired that the pump would run without the oil boiler running.
I managed to reset the controller and get it working again, so it;s timed, but it only does two times a day so I'm getting a new one anyway.

And yes, the upstairs thing is a copper cylinder, immersion thing yes. A guy had a look at it for me and said the issue was that that
water pipe that bring the hot water to the boiler was turned off (the handle to turn it on was also missing) so it does look like that
oil boiler can heat the water, just not currently.
