Diesel 1.9 Golf fell victim to black ice a few weeks ago, car written off by insurance company.

Would cover about 430 km per week, 250 of which would be motorway. Trying to decide what to buy. Diesel or petrol? Premium high as it is and I know its going to go higher. Any helpful suggestions appreciated.

Diesel for economy , petrol for running/repair costs.
Id be a vw /audi fan so im assuming you are similar.
The problem with the vw audi diesels at the top of your price range is they can have trouble , the 2.0 diesel 2005 to 2008 has a known oil pump issue, , the flywheel/clutch , injectors, DPF, EGR, electric hand brake can all give expensive trouble. There is a 1.9 BXE engine code engine that causes bother as well.
If i was you and wanted diesel i would buy a 2003-2005 old model passat 1.9 which was fairly bullit proof.

A petrol on the other hand doesnt have a lot of the above to go wrong but would cost more to run
