Why is it if you pay car tax very 3 months of 6 months it works dearer than paying for the full year

Because if you only pay once a year they have that money to use/accrue interest for the full year.

Plus, it's less paperwork/administration if they only have to deal with you once a year.

So they give you an incentive to only renew once a year.

I see it as an incentive to pay by the year.

Same craic with insurance usually, I wouldn't get too upset tbh.

I earn €319/ week working full time (thanks Bertie/ Enda). I can't afford to pay €385 for my tax in one sitting frankly. I am being punished for not having any money. If I earned enough to afford a slightly better car I would have diesel economy and less motor tax too. I also don't earn enough to qualify for the free charges incentive my bank offers people who earn more than minimum wage.

That's a bags alright, but €1 a week more to be able to pay it in smaller chunks isn't that bad. I always tax mine for 3 months too, hate committing myself to one car for longer

It's the same with everything. If you pay in installments it's dearer than paying it all off at once.

Printing out 4 discs must be prohibitively more expensive than just the one!

It's a sign of the times and it's all character building stuff (I suppose :/ )!! I'ma keep studying part time and look forward to walking out the door eventually. I can't really complain about being warm and dry at work in the meantime and I also can't complain about having a place to go every day because being a construction orphan I didn't have that for long enough. It's hard at the age of 33 to realise I earned more when I was 18

If you feel you're taking home too much you could always petition to have the minimum wage reduced back to pre Bertie rates :)

Well it became the 'target' wage for unscrupulous employers they said it would be and Enda was damn glad to have it.

Motor tax needs to be made easier to pay ,- should close the motor tax offices and allow us to pay in local post offices / machines , just like other bills , and monthly too rather than the present set up of 3 months minimum

If I could just have it direct debited out of my account on a monthly basis that would be perfect, and no penalising for that would be nice too. It's not the worst just throwing 108 a month into an account and paying it off when it comes around. But still annoying.

Queueing up once a month in the post office to see some yoke who has never done a days work get handed a wad of fifties and then hop into a newer car then your own?
For the sake of my own sanity and blood pressure I'll skip!!!

He'd have to buy the angle grinder on the ''never never'' - it'd be quicker to gnaw thru the "virtual' chains!

Does one have to have Car Insurance before taxing a vehicle registered in one's own name?

You do know you can pay it online & don't have to bother queuing up anywhere at all.

It mentions insurance on the form but I'm fairly sure you don't have to fill it in (at the tax office).
If you tax online it's not needed.

Technically Yes. You do have to fill in your Insurance details when renewing your Motor Tax (Name of Insurer, policy number, etc).....

.......but, as you don't have to produce an actual Cert, many people simply stick in random details

You do need it online. They ask for the details of the policy including the insurer, the dates and the policy number. Or at least they did last year for me.

You can put in a policy number from 10 years ago if you like as they have no facility to verify if the policy is valid or not.
