Car hire excess insurance?

Sorry to necro an old thread but it seemed more polite than starting a new one on the same topic. Apologies if not the correct choice.

I travel back to Ireland this weekend for two weeks. Then the UK again 2 months after that. And 2 more weeks in Ireland sometime in August or soon after.

All three times I will be renting a car, so excess insurance seems to make sense as it is much cheaper than the lower excess options from the car hire companies.

So what experience have we here now a few years on? Anyone using a provider they can recommend or that covers both rental in Ireland and UK?

Only keep in mind if you do go down that route you need to cover the full deposit (which can easily go into the thousands) on your credit card, pay it in case of incident and then claim the money back afterwards.
