Hi. Considering a new car. I think I have it narrowed down to 2 options now. Looking at 09/10 models hopefully. Usually run cars for quite a few years, so reliability and low cost of ownership are important. My current car a 04 1.4 petrol Golf has 165k miles on the clock, so milleage would be approx 15k miles per year.

    1. Hyundai i30 / Kia Ceed. Seem to be reliable and fuel efficient in both petrol and diesel form going by the posts on here, so open to either fuel type. I guess as they both have the same running gear it comes down to styling. Quite like the estate models, but the hatch is nice also. I guess a ceed with a couple of years warranty would possibly make more sense? What are the pros and cons of these models? Any reason to pick an i30 over a ceed?

    2. Honda Civic 1.8 petrol hatch or saloon, both body styles are nice. Again seem to be very reliable and fuel efficient. know the tax is a good bit dearer than either the petrol or diesel i30/ceed. What are parts prices like on hondas?

Feel free to share you experiences with these cars.

    Thanks

Parts for Honda are definitely expensive but you don't need them too often.

I've driven both a good bit, the civic is the better car by a good margin. Haven't had the civic long enough to comment on reliability but the Ceed hasn't exactly been fault free with lots of niggling problems.

We have both in the fambly and I reckon the civic is the better car for a few reasons such as practicality, drive, looks and driving position.
That said the ceed/i30 is quite a good car and I'd have one over most cars in that segment.
Post 08 tax on the 1.8 hatch isn't too bad.

We are been lucky on both cars (have both roughly 3 years), but a few minor things have needed doing on the hyundai like brake caliper, tyre pressure sensors (x2), blowing bulbs (sorted) and key breaking.
Literally nothing has gone wrong on the civic.

If you're not bothered about power, the 1.4 iVTEC might be worth a look. The 1.8 is the ideal engine for it though - that said the 1.4 is more plentiful especially as you go up the years. Not too many 1.8 models post 09 as they were a bit expensive (€25k-ish) at the time.
