Is the gfx card type important or just the memory?

I've not owned a "high end PC" for a while - the onboard graphics on my current hp does just fine for browsing and watching TV - but there's a game out that I've got half an eye on. I don't want to go down the road of buying a new PC just to play this game, so I dug out one of my old towers.

According to the specs, it comes with 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT, but the specs for the game state:
Graphics: nVIDIA GeForce GTX 260, 512 MB or ATI Radeon HD 5670, 512 MB (Does not support Intel Integrated Graphics Cards)

So since both my gfx card and the spec say 512MB, should everything work fine, or is there other essential differences between my GeForce and the listed GeForce that would render it incompatible? Opening the old PC, it looks like I could replace the gfx card if necessary, but this PC is at least 5 years old at this point, so I don't know if that would work.

    Some advice?

Your processor is also very old so anything that requires a GTX260 to run will quite possibly run pretty crap even with a new card.

    What is the game?
