Death not mentioned in paper/online?

I don't know where to post this, but thought this might be best.

Is it unusual for a death not to be mentioned in the obituaries section of a newspaper or online?

Anyone I've ever known who passed away has had their death mentioned, not least to inform people of funeral arrangements.
But someone I knew, who died in the last few days, has not had their death mentioned at all.

However, the funeral arrangements have been arranged already.
Just wondered if that's something you've seen before?

A lot of people do not put it in the newspaper as it costs quite a bit. We were given the option by the undertaker as to where, if anywhere, we wanted to put our father's death. I do know of other cases where it doesn't appear anywhere public at all.

It is really up to the family. I have seen some death mentioned in every paper, online and on local radio station. I have seen some just online and others just in the paper. I have seen some not listed anywhere. I have also seen notices listed after the funeral has taken place.

As others have posted, it's optional and it costs money.

    Thanks for those replies, guys.
I never realised it was optional.

Might be no harm to try www.rip.ie.

Yeah I've tried that, no result. Funeral was today anyway.

Are you sure your spelling the name right? I would check rip.ie for the whole county for the last few days.
