Sold mobile, buyer now claims its faulty

I sold a phone via a website last week; I tested it before I met the buyer as it had been sitting in a drawer for almost a year, all seemed fine. The buyer inspected it, paid and left. The buyer didn't bring a sim to test it was unlocked, but I did confirm it was unlocked. I said if there were any issues with the unlocking to contact me.
The buyer has now contacted me to say they have started using it and that the phone isn't working. The fault they say is in the speaker, they can't hear callers but the callers can hear them. They want their money back.

I honestly don't think there was anything wrong with the phone, and am concerned they have damaged the phone themselves. What should I do?

was it a HTC? - they had dreadful issues with the microphone in the HTC One previous models

Some of the issues were hardware related, but most were software

Here's what someone else did (yahoo answers)

Rang HTC & they put the phone in safe mode (Hold down the power button for 3 seconds then you get 4 options, pick the first one "power off" & hold that down for 3 seconds - this will put the phone in safe mode" I made a call in safe mode & i could hear them & vice versa so htc customer service said that it means its a third party problem & to uninstall my apps one by one to find the problem. To take off safe mode - just press power button down again & restart phone. I uninstalled apps by "most recent" - after uninstalling nearly every app & restarting phone again - works perfectly :)

another option is a factory reset of software.
