i know if your nct is out by 6 months and you get it done then youve only months on it to a new test but what if i miss it for 1 year and 1 day, will i get a full year or have to do 2 tests. YEs i know this is a silly question but remember this is ireland we live in where most things are up the left

Less than 3 months from when the test would have been due and you'll get a year/2 years from the due date, so assuming a yearly test, 8 months and 30 days late, you get 3 months, 9 months late and you get 15 months test.

In short he said that OP is right in saying that if he waits one 1 and one day then he will get full year - but not only then. Anything up to 3 month before that will give full year cert as well (plus part of those 3 months).

Simple answer: You will get a 1 year certificate. You will not have to do the test twice.

So if I'm 2 and 3/4 months from one year out, I'll get a new full 12 months

    yes...
Even if you are 2 and 7/8 months from one year out, you'll still get full 12 months.
