    DeWalt's 3.4 Joules seems to offer a much more powerful hammer action than Makita's 2.8 Joules.

    Joule = unit of work. The more Joules the drill puts out the stronger the hammer/chisel action.

    Would that be a massive difference or is there not much in it. Just had look at the masonary bit to go in each drill, there's 2mm difference bigger in the makita.

    Generally the more powerful tool will last longer as it's better able to take the abuse. A bit like a 1 ltr engine and a 2 ltr engine in a car.
    as to the 2 mm difference in the width of the bit, it doesn't really make any difference as it's only about the thickness of a matchstick.
