    Did you ever study Pascals Law in school? It states that pressure exerted anywhere in a confined incompressible fluid is transmitted equally in all directions throughout the fluid such that the pressure variations (initial differences) remain the same.

    This logic is used in aircraft, a basic Cessna will have one hydraulic system that applies brake pressure to the wheels.

    A larger aircraft such as a B777 uses Hydraulics for:
    1. Primary flight controls
    2. Landing gear
    3. Thrust reversers
    4. Main landing gear braking
    5. Main and nose steering
    6. LE Slats
    7. TE Flaps

    A single system can supply sufficient hydraulic pressure (3000 PSI) for all of the above, to allow redundancy and back-ups, the aircraft is equipped with 3 hydraulic systems, with a total of 9 hydraulic pumps.

    Just think about how much force is required to retract the undercarriage of a B777, hydraulics are a wonderful way of providing that force.

    Thanks Smurfjed, that diagram is much better than the ones I was looking at. So hydraulics work by applying force to one point which is then transmitted to another point. The diagrams I was checking out online were very confusing, this clears it up very well.

    AS does the 787, and the higher pressure apparently allows smaller and thus lighter pipes to be used. Came as news to me as well

    Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁
