    Hi All,

Just wondering if there are many Mature Students starting Science courses at Nui Maynooth this September. I had my interview 2 weeks ago and I initially applied for Biological and Biomedical Science but prior to the interview I was unsure so discussed a General Science Degree at the interview.

I got approved for Science With Education. I also had an interview for General Science but as Science with Education was my first choice so that's what I am starting. It's pretty much a general Science degree for 1st year so I will be in a lot of the General Science classes (Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Experimental Physics)

I was approved for General Science at the interview and as I think I will stick to this option. I am nearly finished a Fetac Level 5 Applied Science course and she did say my approval on the Gen. Science was based partly on the fact that I am doing this course.

Yeah, things like that really stand to you. The fact I had done 3 years in NUI Galway doing a general science course stood to me aswell. It also helps I have a massive interest in both teaching and science. You should look into trying to transfer into Biology and Biomedical Science in 2nd year. It was an option for me if I wasn't approved for Science with Education

Maybe consider the Biotechnology course, or the Pharmaceutical course. Both of these have placements as part of the course in 4th year. Could be an advantage, if your priority is to get back to work. ( depending on how "mature" you are, of course)

To be honest, after the interview I decided that Biological and Biomedical Science wasn't really for me. I am glad I have done the Fetac Level 5 as I feel more refreshed in the subjects especially maths! I am thinking of changing the CAO to Biotechnology as option 1 and Gen. Science as my 2nd option.

I am definitely more attracted to the Biotechnology Course and the placement is a plus. I am in my mid-thirties and do want to be in paid employment as soon as possible after completion of the course so the placement will help.

Currently doing this so if you need a heads up on anything, just ask.

Huge jump from level 5 to level 8, if you put in a lot of effort and hard work you should be fine. I studied chemistry at level 5 and sailed through it, level 8 on the other hand was extremely hard.

I have come to a realisation that level 8 will definitely require more work. I think the fact that I actually like science has helped with the decision to pursue education beyond level 5 but as you said I will only get back what I put in!

Doing the same man! There's another boardsie in it as well as a Mature Student! Haven't heard anything but the week of the 14th-18th is induction and Science students are required to attend 3 days and also the week before there is a 2 day induction for Mature Students.

Don't be sh1ting it man. I've been through the first year of a level 8 Science degree before, it's basically the Leaving Cert with a few extra things on top of it. It's good as it helps get you into the swing of studying as that's what you'll need for the next 4 years!
