I used to insure my '94 3 series through 123 for afew years, up until 2013 when I switched to First Ireland as I was putting a classic on the policy as well. The classic is now gone and I was looking forward to getting a nice cheap (sub €300) quote for the old beemer again. Ive tried 123 and Chill and neither system will give me anything....
Since theres been no points/convictions/claims since, am I right in thinking that since the car has gone 20 years old, Im going to have to get a classic policy for that too!??

Age of car is the issue. Many insurers dont even like cars that are over 10 years old and will start loading polices when the car reaches this age, their excuse is they think older cars are involved in more accidents.

Yeah, understandable to some extent but does an NCT count for nothing then. Surely a roadworthy car is a roadworthy car whether its 5 or 25 years old.

Weird thing was you would think I would have had to pay high premiums over the last few years, but the last time I tried getting a quote for it last year, it was coming in at less than 300 for TPFT. Then this year, uninsurable!

The Nct just means that the car is legal to drive on the road. You cannot expect a 4 year old car to have the same insurance rating as a 20 year old car just because both have a NCT cert. Insurance companies have different risk ratings associated with different makes and models. They obviously think that a 20 year old car is a higher risk than say a 4 year old car. This will probably be based on the fact that a 20 year old car is less safe than a more modern car which could result in a higher chance of injuries/fatalities that in turn means them paying out more in medical bills, etc.

I agree, "Old" cars from the 90s are really well build and will last many years as long as they are taken care of. The insurance company still have an old fashioned view of old cars and think they are just bangers that owners will just allow to degrade until it breaks down.

Thats a fair point. A '97 3 series saloon doesnt exactly get glowing endorsement from NCAP

So I got a renewal quote from my current broker and it isnt terrible so Im going to have to go with it. Can I ever expect a letter from them at renewal time basically saying we're no longer able to insure you? In that event, theres no other option but to go for a limited mileage classic policy?
