New to this whole bike thing, and a complete beginner - but thinking of getting my first road bike, and a friend is selling his Claude Milano to 2011, complete with pedals, shoes and some basics thrown in for £200. Would this be a good purchase for this, and how suited is this for a first road bike? Thanks!

I imagine the bike you are looking at is the Claude Butler Milano 2011

It may look something like this

Generally speaking it is an entry level bike and similar to some of the other budget entry level bikes available (Halfords Carrerra TDF, Viking Roma or Jupiter Sprint). There is nothing wrong with it and provided it has been well looked after and properly serviced it should suit your needs and the price is reasonable given the added extras. Below is a link to the original listing.

However there is a lot of value in the second hand market and the old adage of never selling or buying a second hand car to / from a friend also rings true for bikes.

At your budget £200 (€250??) you may also find other options from the larger retailers (Giant Defy, Specialized Allez, Trek 1 Series). The brands would be much easier to sell and hold a better resale value if you decide cycling is not for you or if you want to upgrade in the future.
